i think there is definitely a ridiculous amount of fear mongering and misinformation spreading, people need to learn to be media literate, HOWEVER we have a right to be afraid of violent crimes around our school. it’s scary. we shouldn’t be desensitized to it because it shouldn’t happen at all

There’s a difference between being desensitized and knowing how to respond like an adult to community violence, something a school of mostly wealthy, sheltered students wouldn’t know how to handle.

i understand your point and it is valid but if you are OP your original post reads that you are downplaying the severity of the situation

being scared that you can be a target of random acts of violence isn’t a sign that you’re sheltered.

I dont think that means they’re sheltered though. Immature, some, yes. I think this is a very normal response. Not how a threat should be handled, but public panic is pretty normal

i also hope we can all agree that NUPD’s lack of communication is making this significantly worse

I think that’s very fair of you to say. The fear mongering is out of control and people need to focus on being aware and safe and all that lol unfortunately i just try to remind myself this is yikyak and that’s how it goes 😭

Ah yeah I am OP and I was saying everyone sounds sheltered because they sound frantic and demanding classes be cancelled like they never had anything like this happen before. Instead of being more vigilant, it just sounds like everyone’s panicking and centering themselves in a situation where they weren’t a direct victim or witness.

The people that live on that block though, their reaction makes sense
